Eight MPs switch parties

Article 83 (a) allows Members of Parliament to switch parties twelve months to a general election.

As the country braces for the 2026 general elections, eight lawmakers have abandoned their parties and joined new ones.


Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has today (Wednesday, May 05) revealed this while chairing the inaugural sitting of the fifth session commonly known as State of Nation Address (SONA).

The aforementioned who have notified her include; Twaha Kagabo.

Kagabo crossed from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

On the other hand, Anthony Akol (kilak North), and Emmanuel Ongiertho (Jonam county) crossed from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to the ruling party.

Other new ruling party converts include Martin Ojara Mapenduzi (Layibi-Bardege) who has been an independent.

That said, Among also revealed that former Leader of Opposition (LOP) Mathias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe), Micheal Kakembo Mbwatekamwa (Entebbe Municipality), Abed Bwanika (Kimaanua-kabonera) have jumped ship to the Democratic Front (DF) they recently unveiled.
