Jinja southern division mayor Ashraf Nasser has been trounced in the division's NRM chairperson elections.

During the elections at the Civil Service College Uganda (CSCU) in Jinja city on Monday, May 19, 2021, Nasser polled 116 votes, while his main rival, Majidu Musongola, polled 203. In third place was the little-known Pius Terikya, who scored only four votes.

The elections, which were earlier to be held at Jinja City Hall, were transferred to CSCU to ensure security. The elections conducted by returning officer Shadrick Musana said the process was free and fair.

During the elections, Nasser's team was mainly composed of the elderly and People with Disabilities (PWDs) accepted defeat.

“We are all members of one party, I will not petition the party's electoral commission over the results, but what I wish is for my brother a good term in office. Anywhere I have wronged you, I’m really sorry and pledge to give you all support while serving the party,” Nasser said.

Musongola pledged to work for the good of the party to see that the lower local councils are strengthened and to also capture the interests of all party members.

In the elderly league, Faruk Jumba was elected as the chairperson, with Margate Kunya as the vice-chairperson. Margate Masaba (secretary), Mukama Muhammad (treasurer) and John Muweema (publicity).

Meanwhile, in Jinja northern division, Micheal Waiswa won the chairpersonship with 241 votes, while his rival Fred Batambuze got 221 votes. David Musense won the vice-chairperson post while Hajjait Amina Mirembe went unopposed for publicity.

Meanwhile, Jinja Resident City Commissioner Richard Gulume said, “Only voters on the NRM registers were allowed at the venue to line up behind their preferred candidate. This outcome is part of a broader trend of rebuilding the party's strength in Jinja city, where maturity has been exhibited to regain ground in division-level races," he said.
