Kawempe by-election: Obote's son in fresh bid for Parliament

Although his father was the founding father of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) Engena has decided to run as an independent candidate in Kawempe, the place for his mother Miria Obote.

KAMPALA - Stanley Edward Maitum Engena made his entrance to the Kawempe-based Electoral Commission (EC) offices to get himself nominated a few minutes before the closure of the nomination exercise.

Son of former President of Uganda Apollo Milton Obote and Mrs. Miria Obote, he was among the ten duly nominated candidates for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat.

On arrival, he was escorted by several people among them his three seconders for the parliament seat.

Although his father was the founding father of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) Engena has decided to run as an independent candidate in Kawempe, the place for his mother Miria Obote.

Former First Lady Miria Obote was born in Kawempe, to Bulasio Kalule, a civil servant who worked with the Department of Road Maintenance in the Ministry of Works and his wife Malita.

She attended Gayaza High School and later Makerere University.

This is Engena' second bid for a seat in the August House, having contested in Apac municipality, and lost with 99 votes to fellow independent candidate Patrick Ocan.

Other candidates

The Electoral Commission (EC) concluded the two-day nominations of Kawempe North candidates.

EC returning officer designate Henry Makabayi nominated: Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Sadat Mukiibi aka Khalifah, National Unity Platform candidate Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, Muhammed Lusswa Luwemba and Hanifa Karadi Murewa, both independent candidates.

On the second day of nomination, Makabayi nominated Faridah Nambi from the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Henry Kasacca Mubiru from the Democratic Party (DP), Ismail Musiitwa from People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Muhamood Mutazindwa, Moses Nsereko and Stanley Edward Maitum Engena, who are both independent candidates.

The duly nominated candidates include two women.

The ten candidates seek to replace the fallen Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya who died earlier this year.
