A total of 2,500 students from 77 secondary schools are expected to gather at Bishop Maraka College in Kumi Municipality, Eastern Uganda, for the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Teso Zonal Ball Games I championships.
The event, hosted across Kumi District and the municipality, will feature boys’ and girls’ football competitions. The games will officially kick off on Saturday, April 11, 2025, with a brass band procession through Kumi Municipal streets, culminating at Bishop Maraka College grounds.
Bishop Maraka College and Wiggins SS secured hosting rights after submitting successful bids to the regional vetting committee.
Francis Ojangole, representing Teso Zone chairperson John Robert Osuu, confirmed the venues following an inspection of facilities. The USSSA team assessed competition grounds, accommodation, medical services, water and sanitation, and the planned secretariat, expressing confidence in Bishop Maraka’s preparedness.
Ojangole, who also serves as the zone’s treasurer, stated, “We are satisfied with the arrangements and believe the school can successfully host the games.”
Francis Ebenu, Bishop Maraka’s headteacher, affirmed the school’s readiness for the four-day event, scheduled from July 10 to 14, 2025.
John Bosco Omugen, Kumi Municipal Sports Officer, praised the zonal executive for awarding hosting rights to Kumi and urged the school to maintain high logistical standards to accommodate the large number of participants.
“The school must ensure all aspects—from accommodation to facilities—meet the required standards for a smooth championship,” Omugen emphasized.
