Kenyan and South Sudanese athletes have already arrived in Uganda ahead of the AKii Bua Invitational Athletics Championship, set for Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Mandela National Stadium.

The event marks a historic moment as Uganda Athletics celebrates its 100th anniversary. Athletes from across Africa are expected to showcase their best performances in honor of John Akii Bua, Africa’s legendary hurdler and Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist.

Akii Bua made history by winning gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1972 Munich Olympics with a record time of 47.82 seconds—an achievement that remains unmatched by any Ugandan athlete to date.

A former police officer, his legacy continues to inspire generations of athletes across the continent.

Kenya’s Tyson Omondi expressed excitement about the competition, stating, “We are here to prove that Africa is full of talent, and we will give our best.”

Similarly, Sarah Moraa, the 800m sensation, echoed his sentiments: “It’s my first time in Uganda, and while I’ve already qualified for the World Championships, I’m here to give my best performance,” she said.

The day’s events will kick off with a 10km fun run, followed by a tree-planting ceremony and children’s games for participants aged between 6 and 14 years.

The inaugural Akii Bua Invitational Memorial Meet is categorized under the World Athletics Bronze Series and features a total prize purse of $50,000 (approximately UGX 180 million).

The event will be graced by State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, who will serve as the chief guest.
