Female darter Harriet Akot aims to feature in the World Masters Darts Championship in September.
Akot beat a strong opposition to win the Uganda Darts Association ranking tournament at Mamerito Hotel in Wakiso District.
She beat Winnie Asuga 4-2 in the final, and en route to the final, she defeated Africa reigning African champion Sarah Makanga 4-2 in another mouth-watering game.
“I have won today, but it is not over. My target is playing in the World Masters,” Akati said.
The tournament at Mamerito was a ranking event that will have the best-ranked players battle out for national team selection ahead of the Tanzania Open, Uganda Open, Egypt Open, and World Masters this year.
The Tanzania Open is in June, the Uganda Open and World Masters are in September, and the Egypt Open is in October.
Akot beat Sarah Makanga 4-2 in the semi-final and before seeing off Winnie Asuga 4-2 in the final.
The UPDF player was excited about winning the tournament and noted that it is a motivation for her to work harder for international accolades.
“I will take it as it is and train harder for more wins because I want to be part of team Uganda for the World Darts,” she said.
Akot, last tasted a major victory in 2018 when she beat Kenya’s Suzan Wanja in the final to win the East Africa Darts Championship.
That year the Club 291 of Lira was crowned the 2018 USPA female darter of the year.
In the men’s category, Kalete beat Uganda Open reigning Champion Isaac Pass of Uganda Wildlife Authority 5-2 in the final.
Pass took an early 1-0 lead, but Kalete fought back four games consecutive, Pass won his second to take it 4-2, but Kalete struck the final game sending Prisons teammates wild in celebrations.
He last tasted a major victory in 2014 when he beat Geofrey Onen in an all-Ugandan affair final to win the Uganda International Open.
He had earlier won the same tournament in 2004 while featuring for Lugazi darts club after beating Kenyan Samuel Nyenga 4-3 in a tightly contested final.
He went on in 2006 to win the Inter-club championship after defeating Isaac Berocan of URA in another mouthwatering final.
The two had tied 6-6 before Kalete threw the winning dart.
The players will play another ranking tournament and later the best players will be selected to play the national team selections.
According to UDA chairman Abbey Ariong, he wants the team to represent Uganda at the World Masters where Uganda has eight slots of which four are men, women (2), a boy, and a girl.
