A huge crowd of supporters packed Bishop Maraka College grounds in Kumi Municipality to witness the thrilling climax of the USSSA Teso Zone qualifiers on Tuesday afternoon.

The five-day tournament, organised by the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) from January 10 to 14, saw Amus College School emerge as the standout performer, securing three trophies in boys’ and girls’ football, as well as boys’ volleyball.

The event, featuring 78 school teams from 11 districts across the Teso region, reached its peak in a dramatic boys’ football final. Amus College triumphed over Ngora High School 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout after a goalless stalemate in regulation time. The match was a rollercoaster of near misses, relentless attacks, and deafening fan support, with neither side able to break the deadlock despite multiple chances—especially in a frantic second half.

In the shootout, Amus held their nerve, converting three penalties while Ngora missed two, sealing victory for the Bukedea-based school in the Kumi-hosted championship.

Calvin Opio, Amus College’s games teacher, credited the win to teamwork among players, supporters, and management. “We struggled in the district qualifiers, where Bukedea Comprehensive School swept both titles. But our players stayed focused and delivered at the regional level. Now, our target is national glory,” he said.

Boys’ Football: Amus College, Ngora High, Labira Girls SS, Bukedea Comprehensive

The victorious teams will now represent the Teso region at the upcoming national championships.
