Maryhill High School, Ntare School, Boni Consilii Girls, and Al-Noor Islamic were the biggest winners at the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Associations (USSSA) Ankole zone ball games II as the competition climaxed at Bushenyi Main Stadium in Bushenyi Municipality on Friday.
The four sides registered double championships each, of the games that attracted over 1500 athletes from about 100 schools from the 12 districts of the zone according to USSSA zonal mapping.
Boni Consilii Isingiro emerged as the girls' football U16 champions after beating Kibingo Girls 3-0 and also won their first-ever netball title following a 23-17 win over record winners Bweranyangi Girls.
Maryhill High School retained the handball title after beating Kyeizooba girls 15-13 in a tense finale and then won the newly introduced basketball 3x3 accolade after overcoming Sacred Heart Mushanga 29-7.
Ntare School successfully defended their handball title again after beating rivals Mbarara High School 16-11 and also the basketball 3x3 title following a 17-8 win over Ibanda SS while Al-Noor also came out double champions following their victories in both the boys’ U16n and U14 competitions.
The volleyball boys’ title went back to St Augustine after the 2022 winners beat surprise package Engari SS from Kazo district, by 3 straight sets in a one-sided final with St Elizabeth also retaining the girls' title after beating Maryhill High School 3-0 in a repeat of last year’s finale.
The best teams in each category qualified to represent the zone at this year’s edition of the national USSSA ball games II due in Kabale from July 9-17 and according to zonal chairman Egidio Mucunguzi, the qualified teams will compete favourably at the nationals.
“We have reached the climax of the championship successfully and the best teams won and qualified for the national championship that will be in our neighbouring zone of Kigezi and we have hopes that these teams will win medals this time,” Mucunguzi said.
Last year in the championships held in Lira, only St Elizabeth girls (volleyball champions) from Ankole zone managed to win a gold medal and will be vying to defend their title in Kabale.
The Kabale national event will see teams compete in an increased number of disciplines (13) that is netball, volleyball, basketball 3x3, handball, football U14, football U16, woodball, dance sport, beach soccer, beach volleyball, athletics, rugby 7s, and Lacrosse.
