USA-based Ugandan boxer Muzamir ‘Mr Take Over’ Ssemuddu believes joining the iconic Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis camp is a dream come true.

Indeed, it is a dream come true not only for Ssemuddu but also for those who have witnessed the 2024 Africa Games light-middleweight bronze medalist hustle with life in Kalerwe market, a Kampala suburb.

Since his childhood, ‘Mr Take Over’ had virtually spent his entirety as a butcher in Kalerwe market before turning into a bodyguard to musician John Kasada alias John Blaq in 2021.

“Three years ago, I could hardly dream of training with a legend in the stature of ‘Tank’. All I can say is it has been the Almighty Allah,” Ssemuddu, now based in Silver Springs, Maryland in the USA, told Vision Sport.

And like a quote from boxing great, Muhammad Ali (rip) that “Do not count the days but make the days count,” Ssemuddu who started his boxing career in the ghettos of Kalerwe is finally set to box in the USA.

The former national boxing team light middleweight sealed a deal to join Gervonta’s training camp under the flagship of Urban Boxing Gym.

“My target here is to use the many professional coaches and facilities I’m surrounded with to punch my way to the top. I came to the States to put Ugandan boxing on top. I want to be a World Champion,” he added.

After Shariff ‘The Lion’ Bogere, Ssemuddu becomes the second Ugandan boxer to train with Gervonta.

Bogere and Gervonta were signed by boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in 2016 and surprisingly both as lightweights.

Gervonta, currently the face of World boxing, tops the pound-for-pound world rankings with Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez.

The Baltimore-born 30-year-old lightweight who parted ways with Floyd in 2022 is undefeated in his 30 pro fights with 28 knockouts on his name.

‘Tank’ is also a three-division world champion holding both the World Boxing Association (WBA) super lightweight title, the WBA lightweight and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and WBA super featherweight titles.

Ssemuddu joins him with his management team, Urban Boxing that signed him straight from Uganda to the USA, in May this year.

The former Kololo boxing club’s pugilist who was used to training drills of coach Samuel Kabugo, Lawrence Kalyango ‘Coach Lora’, and Twaibu Mayanja is currently trained by America’s legendary boxing coach Calvin Ford.

Moses Muhangi, the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) president asserts that Ssemuddu’s move to Gervonta’s camp is a huge milestone for Ugandan boxing.

“As UBF, we are proud of Ssemuddu for reaching such bigger heights. He started active boxing in the UBF boxing Champions League. Currently he is our best export. Not even the sky will be his limit”.

Ssemuddu’s move to Gervonta’s camp comes weeks after his colleague Sulaiman Segawa has just won the WBC-silver featherweight world title when he unanimously defeated America’s Ruben Villa.
