With just days to polls that will usher in a new leadership, cricket governing body Uganda Cricket Association has parted ways with CEO John Walusimbi.
Appointed 12 months ago, Walusimbi’s contract was terminated by UCA chairman Michael Nuwagaba after a review of his performance.
A formal statement from the UCA confirmed that the move was made, “following a strategic meeting review by the board aimed at enhancing the growth and development of the game in the country”, and added that “Evelyne Kabongera, who is the current financial accountant takes over as the UCA CEO in acting capacity as a permanent replacement is sought to steward the secretariat”.
Walusimbi was on a performance-based contract, and the review left his superiors unimpressed with his contribution. Sources told New Vision Sports Nuwagaba, who is not up for reelection, felt it necessary to make the call, despite the potential for attracting negative publicity to the sport.
The UCA elective assembly will be held Saturday at Kati Kati, with Jackson Kavuma and Fred Lutaya set to battle for the top position of chairman.
