In the women’s category, Cherop earned Uganda’s first medal at the championship by finishing third in the 5000m race, dominated by Ethiopian runners. Cherop clocked a personal best time of 15:25.02. The gold and silver medals went to Ethiopia’s Medina Elsa and Mekedes Alemeshete, respectively.
In the men’s 5000m, Kenneth Kiprop clinched Uganda’s second bronze medal, posting a season-best time of 13:41.73. He finished behind Ethiopia’s Abdisa Fayisa and this year’s champion, Andrew Kiptoo Alamisi from Kenya. Another Ugandan in the race, Samuel Simba Cherop, finished fifth.
With two medals so far, Uganda’s performance at the championships has already surpassed their showing in Cali, where they secured only one bronze medal, won by Prisca Chesang in the 5000m.
These bronze medals by Kenneth Kiprop and Charity Cherop mark a significant achievement for Uganda on the global stage, highlighting the nation’s growing presence in long-distance running.
As the Under-20 World Athletics Championships progress, Uganda's athletes have already made their mark, and the nation will be looking forward to building on this success in the years to come.
