The ladies’ team of Jackie Kamunyu and Berna Musanabera drew inspiration from the International Women’s Day theme 'Accelerate Action’ as they eliminated Brian Manyindo and Mark Musinguzi with a 1UP victory at Entebbe Club.
As the first round of the Stanbic Entebbe Matchplay Challenge ended at the club on Women’s Day, the two women were the only ladies’ pair that exhibited resilience to win their match against men and proceed to the next round.
The second ladies’ team of Rita Apell/Sandra Komakech were not that lucky, falling to Kiryowa Kiwanuka/Elly Mukasa; 3&2 (by three holes with two to go).
Former winning teams of the annual championship, John Muchiri/Isaac Mariera and that of Twijukye Kirarira/Richard Mucunguzi, also matched to the second round after 2UP and 3&2 victories over Ceasar Barole/Chris Kintu and Andrew Atuhaire/Esther Angayira, respectively.
Yunus Bbaale and Anthony Agaba secured victories by six holes with four holes remaining in their matches.
There were also wins for Andrew Baguma/Peter Apell, who beat Phillip Noah Kaddu/Timothy Lwanga after the second hole of a sudden-death play-off, just like Daniel Muwooya/James Okema and Kin Kariisa/John Basabose who also beat Moses Ssebugwawo/Charles Odere and Michael Bironse/Kevin Ninyesiga after the first hole of sudden death, respectively.
Shaban Ram and Charles Mubiru won their match against Jacob Byamukama and Peter Kagumya with a 6&5 score.
Meanwhile, the pairs of Yunus Bbaale and Anthony Agaba, Evelyne Atukunda and Ellis Katwebaze, and Nelson Musinguzi and Paul Okware each secured victories by six holes with four holes remaining in their matches.
They faced Walter Tukahiirwa and David Tumwesigye, Mark Nahabwe and Allan Muhumuza, and last year’s finalists Tony Kisadha and Richard Mwami, respectively.
Twinemanzi Tumubweinee/Robbins Mwehaire, Richard Mugisha/Louis Tumukunde, Dennis Ankunda/Brian Omeda, Tony Ojok/Thomas Niwamara’s 3&2 wins over Nicholas Kebba/Edwin Baguma, Michael Andama/Jim Kamanyi, Michael Nimoh/Samuel Kinyanjui and Samson Agamire/Johnson Dairo's qualification to the next round to be held on April 12.
There were also close victories for Herbert Kamuntu/Stephen Ojambo who edged Darius Mugisha/Dennis Kawalya, 1UP; just like Sam Kacungira/Vincent Katutsi who stopped Peter Magona/Allan Muhereza in similar fashion.
James O’Sullivan/Greg Patterson saw off Charles Kizito/Suubi Kiwanuka by 4&3, the same way Serwano Walusimbi/Paul Katuramu eliminated Lony Akena/Monne Michael.
The other qualified teams to the next round include Mark Namanya/Michael Tumusiime who stopped Lino Anguzu/Gordon Obitre Gama, 2&1, Milton Edimu/Lloyd Busulwa who eliminated Paul Nuwagaba/Michael Muhangi and Peter Atwiine/Bob Matsiko, who beat Arthur Arinaitwe/Ruth Mugisha with the same score.
It was the same score that Casper Okiru/Ronald Osekeny, and Alvin Muhimbura/Isaiah Tugumenawe scored against Morgan Otile/Herbert Opolot and Dennis Tera/Harry Hakiza respectively.
Tony Kisadha and Richard Mwami.
Charles Kabunga, who opted for another partner Steven Kitamirike for this year’s championship advanced past Paul Nsereko/Mugisha Muntu, 3&1 as Alex Mukasa/James Orima and Andrew Kibaya/Edward Kabuchu also won 2UP against Apollo Segawa/Mathias Kalule and Jackson Were/Habyarima Paul respectively, among other matches.
