Uganda’s 'Dancing Master' Lawrence Muwonge delivered a unanimous victory against Tanzania’s Ali Karim Lafunda, cementing his position as the top contender for the World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA) Africa super lightweight title.
The two fighters clashed in a gruelling ten-round bout on Liberation Day (January 26) at Hamz Stadium, with prominent businessman and stadium owner Hamis Kiggundu among the VIP spectators.
This WABA elimination title fight was pivotal in determining who would challenge the reigning Africa title holder, Nigeria’s Efe Ujimadu.

Muwonge, a former Africa Boxing Union (ABU) super lightweight champion, entered the ring seeking redemption after his previous loss to Tanzania’s Abbada Ferouz Cadabra in Dar es Salaam. His victory over Lafunda has propelled him back among the division’s elite fighters.
“I’m back to where I belong. It was a must-win for me. I’m grateful I have defeated not only a tougher opponent but also one who is among the top-ranked on the continent,” Muwonge told Vision Sport.
“And now I have sorted out the Tanzanian, my next move is to contend for the WABA Africa title, and I’m ready for anyone.”
Muwonge’s current ring record stands at 13-11-2, positioning him as a formidable contender for the coveted WABA Africa title.
The event, organised by Big Strikers International, also featured thrilling fights, including a standout performance by 2019 Africa featherweight silver medallist Isaac “Stinger” Masembe, who defeated Ronald Jjemba by RSC1 (referee stopped contest in round one). Additionally, Junjju Power knocked out Tanzania’s Karim Migea in the first round.
However, the excitement of the evening was briefly overshadowed by disorganisation from the event’s organisers. A welterweight contest between Uganda’s Isaac “Sparta” Ssebuufu and Tanzania’s Laurent Segu was delayed as both fighters refused to leave the dressing room until their fight purses were cleared by event organiser Emma Mwesigwa.
Despite the hiccups, the night’s main attraction reaffirmed Muwonge’s readiness to claim the WABA Africa title and continue his ascent in the boxing world.
