The North Eastern Region Hebron Omax Omeda Memorial Track and Field Meet, scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2025, in Serere District, promises to be more competitive and thrilling than ever.
The one-day event will bring together 520 local and national athletes from the Teso and Karamoja regions, showcasing their talent in various track and field events. This year’s edition holds special significance as it coincides with the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) celebrating 100 years of existence and achievements.
Hosted at Serere Secondary School grounds, this will be the third time the event takes place in Serere District. The memorial run was first held at Soroti Sports Ground in 2021 before relocating to Serere, the birthplace of the late Hebron Omax Omeda.
Jimmy Isamat, Chairperson of the North East Athletics Association, expressed high expectations for the event. “We anticipate good competition, and this meet will help us identify more talents that can be presented for the national trials on the Uganda Athletics Federation calendar,” he said.
Isamat added that the event will also be used to profile the best athletes in the competition, aligning with the UAF’s centenary celebrations.
Samuel Okello, a sprinter specializing in the 400m, is among the athletes ready to take on the challenge. “I’m prepared for any challenge during the run. It’s not my first time competing against national athletes like Tom Dradriga, Haron Adoli, and Shida Adoli. If they’re coming, they should know it won’t be an easy meet,” Okello said. He also expressed his determination to walk away with a cash prize.
Dominic Otucet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation, highlighted the significance of the event in the context of the federation’s centenary. “Achieving 100 years as a federation is no small feat. We are proud to have the Hebron Omax Omeda and Patrick Etolu memorials as part of our celebrations, marking a significant milestone in our dedication and commitment to the sport,” Otucet said.
He emphasized the UAF’s role in promoting and nurturing athletics talent across Uganda, elevating the sport nationally and uniting the country through shared victories and cherished memories.
“As we reflect on the rich history of Ugandan athletics, we recognize the countless athletes, coaches, and officials who have contributed to the growth and success of our sport. Their hard work and determination have paved the way for future generations, inspiring young athletes to pursue their dreams on the track,” Otucet added.
The Hebron Omax Omeda Memorial Meet not only honors the legacy of a local sports icon but also serves as a platform to celebrate Uganda’s athletic achievements and inspire the next generation of talent. With fierce competition expected, the event promises to be a highlight of the 2025 athletics calendar.
