As districts, cities, and municipalities compete for slots in the upcoming National Primary Schools’ Athletics and Para-Games in Kabale, Soroti District and City have selected 48 athletes to represent them.

The qualifying event, attended by Uganda Athletics Federation delegates, took place at Soroti Sports Ground on Easter Monday.

Young competitors showcased their skills in events such as the 50m hurdles, 60m flat race, swing, shot put, javelin, 4x50m relays, and cross country. The national finals will be held in a 10-day championship at Kitgum Public School, Kitgum District.

Patty Emokor, Soroti City Senior Education Officer, emphasized the importance of co-curricular activities, noting that they fall under Creative Arts and Physical Education (CAPE) in the primary school syllabus.

She stressed that the Ministry of Education and Sports requires all learners to participate in such activities to maintain physical fitness, refresh their minds, and enhance academic engagement. Emokor also urged the selected athletes to uphold discipline as a key factor for success in sports.

Richard Elasu, Chairperson of Uganda Primary Schools’ Sports Association (UPSSSA) for Soroti District, confirmed that the chosen team will undergo residential training before heading to Kabale for the nationals. He expressed confidence in the athletes' abilities to secure medals at the competition.

Meanwhile, Rev. Can. Duncan Mugumya, Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports at the Ministry of Education and Sports, has repeatedly cautioned district Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) and education officers to ensure that government funds allocated for sports are used appropriately.

Francis Aurut, UPSSA General Secretary for Soroti District, stated that the championship serves as a platform to identify talented boys and girls capable of winning national honors for the district.

The 2025 National Primary Schools’ Athletics Championship is scheduled for May 5, with young athletes across Uganda preparing with heightened enthusiasm and determination to compete in various track and field events.
