St. Kagwa Bushenyi High School made history on Sunday, clinching the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ankole Zone boys’ football championship for the first time in 14 years.

The home side edged St. John Fisher Ibanda SS 1-0 in a tense final before a packed crowd at Bushenyi Main Grounds.

Darius Nyesiga’s first-half header proved decisive, ending St. Kagwa’s long wait for glory since the zonal competition system began in 2011. Under coach Collins Agaba, the team overcame years of near-misses to lift the trophy in front of their jubilant supporters.

“This victory rewards years of hard work and discipline. We’re proud of our boys and will continue guiding them,” said head teacher Kananga Kamugisha.

The five-day tournament saw shock exits, including 14-time champions Ryakasinga CHE crashing out in the group stage. Other heavyweights like Al Noor Islamic, Mbarara High, and defending champions Welden School also fell short. Six schools were disqualified over player eligibility issues, prompting a stern warning from PES commissioner Rev. Can Duncans Mugumya against such violations.

St. Kagwa will now lead Ankole Zone’s contingent—joined by Ibanda SS, Nyamitanga SS, and Kicwamba High—at the national finals from May 5-13 at Ngora High School.
