Rwanda won by 5 wickets

Uganda suffered their second defeat at the Kwibuka women’s T20 after losing by five wickets to hosts Rwanda at the Gahanga Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Rwanda won the toss and opted to field thrusting Uganda’s batters into the deep early in the innings. Ugandan captain Janet Mbabazi scored 11 runs off of 10 balls. Opening partner Esther Iloku could only score six runs before she was caught which put pressure on Immaculate Nakisuuyi (44 runs) and Kevin Awino (8 runs) to stabilise the innings for Uganda.

Rita Musamli had the most impactful cameo as she came and scored 36 runs off 29 balls to put Uganda in the driving seat at the end of the innings. With some good shot making, Uganda finished their 20 overs with 119/6.

“We lost it in the fielding. We have ourselves to blame for that a couple of dropped catches and no commitment in the fielding. In the power play we lost a lot of early wickets. I think having Kevin come there and help rotate the strike was good, 119 was a good total for us to defend. We just had a sloppy fielding display,” said Mbabazi.

Rwanda’s Marie Bimenyimana was in fine form and led the chase scoring 46 off 44 balls and was especially dangerous in the power play. Rwanda did a lot of the damage then which made the chase easier towards the end of the overs. Ended the match in the 18.4 overs handing Uganda their second defeat in the tournament.

This was Uganda’s second loss in two days after losing by five runs to Nigeria on Wednesday. The Victoria Pearls finish the group in second place and get a tougher semifinal opponent.
