Uganda's representatives at the ongoing ISF Gymnasiade U18 games in Manama, Bahrain, have shown strong performances, particularly in basketball 3x3.
Seroma Christian High School’s boys' team secured a crucial victory against hosts Bahrain, winning 13-11 in a tightly contested match.
The quartet of captain Amos Mugisha, Franklin Fondo, Aaron Kutesa, and Terence Obua held their ground, with Mugisha's assists and Fondo's finishing helping to clinch the win. This result gives them two points from three games, placing them in third in Group D behind Brazil and North Macedonia, and keeps their hopes of advancing alive.
The boys’ team, coached by Nick Natuhereza, has shown resilience, having previously won 14-8 against Nepal but lost 16-12 to North Macedonia. They now face Brazil, Malawi, Italy, and India in the remaining group games, needing two more wins to progress to the round of 16.
Team captain Mugisha expressed the team’s pride and motivation, saying, "We are delighted to have come out victorious it being our first time at this high-level competition. We shall keep working hard because we want to do good for our school and the country."
However, the girls’ team has struggled, losing their fourth game in Group C to China, 20-8. They have upcoming games against England, Bahrain2, and North Macedonia. Despite the setbacks, team captain Mary Nanyonga remains optimistic, noting that the experience has been valuable.
Uganda's table tennis teams concluded their group games, with all teams now competing for placement positions rather than medals. Individual matches in table tennis and badminton are set to continue, with players looking to make strides in the medal rounds.
The ISF Gymnasiade, which started last Thursday, will continue until this Thursday, featuring finals across 26 disciplines.
Uganda is represented by six schools, including Kibuli SS, three Mbogo schools, Seroma, and Lubaga, as well as a five-member girls' athletics team, competing across basketball 3x3, table tennis, swimming, tennis, and badminton.
