Ugandan universities make their mark at Afro Varsity 3x3

UMU finished seventh overall out of 18 teams, securing three wins from five matches.

While Uganda Christian University (UCU) continued its dominance in the Afro Varsity 3x3 Basketball Challenge by successfully defending its titles over the weekend, other Ugandan universities, including Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), also delivered commendable performances.

UMU finished seventh overall out of 18 teams, securing three wins from five matches.

Their victories included a 14-12 win over Kisii University, a 17-13 result against the Victoria Waves, and their most impressive triumph—a 21-17 victory over Ivory Coast’s AS Université FHB. They suffered two close losses, falling 17-13 to UCU and 16-13 to the USIU Tigers.

Nkumba University followed in eighth place, having recorded two wins—16-8 against Mountains of the Moon and 21-12 over USIU Tigers.

The University of Rwanda, operating under the Kampala University umbrella, secured fourth place overall.

Meanwhile, Victoria University’s teams—the Victoria Crocs and Victoria Waves—finished eleventh and thirteenth respectively, registering two and one wins.

Makerere University notched one victory, an 11-7 win over fellow Ugandan side Mbarara University of Science and Technology, to finish fourteenth. Mbarara followed in fifteenth place.

Debutants Mountains of the Moon and the International University of East Africa (IUEA) concluded the tournament in seventeenth and eighteenth positions, respectively.



In the women’s division, Uganda was represented by four teams, including the title-winning UCU Lady Canons. The Victoria University Seals also impressed, finishing fourth overall with three wins from six games.

Makerere University and the Victoria She Crocs were the other Ugandan women’s teams that participated in the two-day event held at Hamz Stadium. The women’s competition attracted a total of 14 teams.
