In a significant step toward transforming Uganda's sports landscape, more than 30 coaches and physical education teachers recently completed a rigorous two-day training program at Kid of Africa Bwerenga in Kawuku.
The initiative, organized by Sembeza Africa—an emerging leader in sports development and mental health—focused on equipping participants with essential skills for nurturing young athletes.
The program's core philosophy centers on the idea that exceptional athletes are molded from an early age. Andrew Byekwaso, CEO of Sembeza Africa, stressed that effective youth coaching extends beyond technical instruction. "Sports begin from the primary level," he explained.

"If athletes aren't developed with the right mindset early on, Uganda's talent pipeline will always face challenges. This isn't just about physical training—it's about cultivating discipline, character, and a lasting work ethic."
The comprehensive curriculum blended classroom learning with practical sessions across multiple sports, including rugby, netball, football, and volleyball. Coaches also participated in specialized workshops covering child psychology, athlete development, and mental resilience—critical components for guiding young athletes through their formative years.

For participants, the training proved transformative. Pearson Makoma, a junior rugby coach, reflected on the profound impact of watching young athletes evolve. "There's immense satisfaction in seeing players grow not just in ability, but in confidence," he shared. "Our goal is to ensure these athletes transition with solid fundamentals, whether they pursue sports professionally or otherwise. That's the legacy we're creating."
Nabulya Maria, an aspiring netball coach, appreciated the program's cross-disciplinary approach. "I've gained valuable insights from sports like rugby that I'd never explored before," she noted. "This should be a nationwide initiative—every district, school, and coach deserves access to this knowledge."
The event represents a pivotal shift toward systematic youth sports development in Uganda. As Sembeza Africa continues championing sports as a vehicle for holistic growth, such initiatives promise to reshape the country's athletic future—one young athlete at a time.
