Wananchi SC forward Emmanuel Baguma is happy to have helped his side retain the Hockey Independence Cup tourney this year after beating Badgers HC 1-0 at Busoga College Mwiri in Jinja city.

Wananchi defended the title they won last year's edition which was held in Mbarara beating leatherhead HC.

"I am glad to be part of the team that has defended the hockey independence title despite not having some of our players due to other engagements," Baguma happily noted.

He noted this on Saturday evening after evening crowned champions of the Independence Cup in Jinja city at Busoga College Mwiri.

Wananchi players like Andrew Lubega and keeper Bosco Ochan were not around due to personal engagements but the young players stepped up to form and executed well the game plan to retain the title.

Wananchi scored in the first half of the game through Shaffik Byamukama and Badgers became more attack-minded but we're denied the chance of seeing the back of the net.

Wananchi SC was also able to retain its title in the women’s category after beating Kampala Hockey Club Swans in spot flicks after a 0-0 draw in full-time.

Byamukama was voted the tournament's most valuable player for men while Swan's newly signed Norah Alum was women’s MVP and they each got a trophy and medal.

Wananchi SC tactician Christopher Otim is glad to have led his sides into a title retention campaign even after the exodus of his good players.

“After losing my players to rival sides, I embarked on a campaign of giving an opportunity to the young lads on the team and they have surely lived up to tasks and I don’t regret.”
