Final Match-Play: Bushenyi 10.5 Mbarara 22.5
Golfers have embarked on a campaign to revive the Inter-Region Golf Championship, which was a mainstay on the Uganda Golf Union calendar until 2015.
The last event was played in Entebbe, with Buganda (26 points) winning ahead of record-holders Western, who finished second with 21 points. Eastern and Northern finished third and fourth, respectively.
Now, golfers from the Western region have initiated the Greater Bushenyi versus Greater Mbarara Golf Challenge at Kitante in an effort to revive the championship, which previously rotated across different clubs in the region as golfers competed for their heritages.
The match-play challenge featured 17 players per team, with Mbarara securing a decisive victory, finishing with a commanding score of 22.5 to 10.5 points.
Mbarara’s charge was led by Sarah Nduhukire, Faith Namara, and Patrick Kabonero, who registered dominant wins over Benjamin Ntebekaine, Andy Agaba, and Bertram Mpora—all games ending by 7&6 (won by 7 holes with six to go).
However, the biggest win of the day came from Bushenyi’s Francis Kyegarikye, who defeated Emmanuel Tayebwa by 8&7.
Mbarara continued to dominate, with John Nasasira defeating Barnet Mugisha 6&4, while Evelyn Atukunda secured a similar victory over Collins Nuwagira.
Michael Tumusiime also triumphed over Edward Nyatia (5&4), while Kevin Ninyesiga humbled Dickson Kateshumbwa with a 4&2 score.
Mbarara’s Grace Kabonero, Sam Mugisha, and Moses Matsiko were all too strong for Mark Namanya, Neema Tindyebwa, and Jacob Mugisha, winning by 2UP each.
Saleh Kalema, Edrae Kagombe, Emma Wamala, and Walter Tukahirwa also secured 2UP wins for Mbarara over Bushenyi’s Amanya Mushega, Stephen Asiimwe, Allan Muhereza, and Peter Mukoozi. However, Mbarara’s John Byabagambi fell short against Bushenyi’s Steven Katwiremu, who won 5&4.
