Annitah Akankwatsa, a primary six pupil from Nyamiko Primary School in Bushenyi district, has captured national attention after her courageous bare-chested run during the Bushenyi Municipality kids' athletics championship.
The 1500m runner discarded her blouse under the scorching sun mid-race, transforming from fifth to second position and securing her place in the national championships in Kabale (May 4-13).
Her determination immediately drew support from officials at the event, including Oscar Muhumuza who provided sports attire and Apollo Musherure who contributed 50,000 shillings. The story gained momentum after airing on TV West, reaching Ugandans abroad like Dr. Reuben Twijukye - a former Ugandan athlete now teaching in the U.S.

"I recognised her potential immediately," said Twijukye, who has committed to covering Akankwatsa's school fees and providing mentorship. The Louisiana State University graduate, who earned an athletics scholarship himself, has previously guided Ugandan talents like Tarsis Orogot and Susan Aneno.
For Akankwatsa's mother Annet Kenjore, a single parent struggling after her husband abandoned the family, this support represents hope. "God has answered my prayers through these kind people," she said, acknowledging Twijukye and another benefactor named Benon.
As Akankwatsa prepares for nationals, her story has become more than an athletic feat - it's a testament to how raw talent and determination can inspire collective goodwill across continents.
