HOIMA - Unknown individuals have reportedly removed body parts from a chimpanzee that was killed by a mob in Kihuura village, Butema, in Buhanika sub-county, Hoima district.
The chimpanzee was killed on April 1, 2025, on a resident’s farm in Kihuura.
According to Moses Africa, the in-charge of Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) authorised and facilitated the landowner to bury the carcass on his land.
However, Buhanika LC3 Chairman Jamil Kasangaki expressed concern that unidentified individuals continued to remove body parts from the carcass before its burial and warned that they might exhume it to take more.
When asked about the potential risks of handling the chimpanzee carcass, Dr Margaret Dricilu of UWA said she could only advise after confirming whether the animal had been killed.
Incidents of human- wildlife conflict have been recurrent, with experts attributing them to human encroachment on chimpanzee habitats.
