Ninth Kagulu Rock Climbing Challenge launched

The annual climbing event which usually attracts thousands of tourism enthusiasts, is set for August 17, 2024, in Kagulu sub-county, Buyende district and aims at promoting tourism plus improving livelihoods among the people in Busoga.

JINJA - The ninth edition of the Kagulu Rock Climbing Challenge has officially been launched.

The July 16, 2024, launch by Busoga Kingdom’s tourism minister, Hellen Namutamba, was held at the kingdom's headquarters in Bugembe, Jinja city.

The annual climbing event which usually attracts thousands of tourism enthusiasts, is set for August 17, 2024, in Kagulu sub-county, Buyende district and aims at promoting tourism plus improving livelihoods among the people in Busoga.

Namutamba said the chief climber is expected to be Busoga king (Kyabazinga) William Gabula Nadiope IV and that the guest of honour would be First deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.

“The 3,600ft rock has a well where u can cleanse yourself and it is a rock where someone can do physical exercises. People who climb it have always testified that they have been relieved of Joint and muscle pains. So, I urge everyone to come and participate in the climbing challenge,” Namutamba said.

Namutamba added: “Before the climbing day, we shall have an array of activities lined up including a boot camp, cultural tourism expo, a health camp, a boxing competition and performances from various Busoga artistes."

 The minister urged Kagulu residents to start preparing accommodation for the tourists.

She acknowledged the invaluable contributions of all Vision Group platforms, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Red Cross Jinja and other media houses who have joined hands with them to sponsor the celebration of heritage, adventure and digital tourism.

Geoffrey Muzaale a.k.a Geobless, the chairperson of Busoga Talent and Musicians Network (BTMN), which is an umbrella for Busoga artistes, said several musicians are lined up to perform on the eve of the climbing challenge.
