Regardless of age, children and adolescents, who are experiencing severe psychological distress after disasters or terrorist attacks may fail to report subtle symptoms and behaviours because they lack the cognitive ability to communicate thoughts such as numbing (e.g., lack of feeling, inability to anticipate or look forward to positive events and experiences, altered perception of time and thoughts of meaninglessness) or avoidance.
