Such is the power of classical music; it can even unite people of different religious denominations.

Christ the King Church Choir (from Christ the King Church, Kampala) and Namirembe Cathedral choir brought this to reality when they staged a joint Easter concert at Namirembe Cathedral on Sunday, May 1, 2022.

The two choral musical groups, which are arguably the best in the country, performed John Stainer’s fabulous work, The Crucifixion, and a variety of other songs, related to the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In their repertoire were hymns such as Samuel Sebastian Wesley’s Blessed be the God and Father, George Frideric Handel’s Worthy is the Lamb and Gabriel Faure’s Canticle of Jean Racine. It was amazingly beautiful to hear the traditional Catholic hymn, Yezu Lagira Fuga (by the White Fathers) being sung in the Anglican Cathedral!

The Chairperson of Namirembe Cathedral Choir, Israel Luutu could not hide his excitement.

“This is wonderful. We thank God for it. We last had a joint concert in 1986, at Lubaga Cathedral. This is a true demonstration of ecumenism. It is practical ecumenism, which is practised and not just spoken about.”

The Vicar of Namirembe Cathedral, the Rev. Abraham Muyinda Nsubuga was also visibly excited as he thanked Christ the King Church Choir for accepting the invitation from Namirembe Cathedral Choir, to perform at the cathedral.

John Ssekibaala, the popular choral conductor of Namirembe Cathedral, deserves a big credit for conducting the joint choir so well.

The concert was graced by many Christians, including the Chaplain of the Bishop of Namirembe diocese, the Rev. Kezia Nakkazi and the curate of Christ the King Church, Kampala, the Rev. Fr. Mathias Nteza.

After the concert, the two choral musical groups and their fans had a fellowship cocktail, during which they partook of delicious snacks and soft drinks.
