Wood has evolved from being just a flooring choice to an essential feature in modern kitchens, bathrooms, walls, ceilings, and even focal art pieces.

Its enduring popularity comes from its unique blend of natural beauty and long-lasting strength, making it an attractive option for any home. Sulayman Kiwanuka, a seasoned furniture maker and site technician believes that woodworking transforms interiors by combining aesthetic charm with functionality.

“Wood is a living material,” he says, noting that each piece tells a unique story through its grain, texture, and colour. Unlike metal composites or plastics, wood brings individuality and warmth to any piece. While natural beauty is essential, Kiwanuka emphasises durability through innovative materials.

“We combine wood with advanced materials, like PVC membranes, to offer a wider selection of colours and textures that enhance
both the visual appeal and resilience of each piece.”

Kiwanuka’s approach to furniture design highlights the need for both beauty and strength. He recommends consideration to flexibility, workability and versatility when designing wooden furniture, ensuring that it stands the test of time.

“Homeowners should have a wide range of colours and styles to choose from, allowing them to tailor each item to their home's unique aesthetic,” he says. As much as the aesthetic appeal of wood is important, he emphasises the need for sustainability in contemporary furniture design.

“Wood is a renewable resource, and when used correctly, it can be a sustainable choice for any home. A well-crafted wooden piece should continue to serve its purpose in different ways, whether as a piece of furniture or a decorative element,” he explains.

Florence Nasaka, another seasoned furniture maker from Kampala’s Industrial Area, agrees.

She notes that wood is one of the most durable materials available, especially for Uganda’s climate, where
hard woods like mgavu, mahogany, and msambya are prized for both their beauty and function. According to Nasaka, these timbers are ideal for crafting timeless and contemporary furniture designs.

Crafting beautiful wood furniture

Nasaka emphasises that patience and attention to detail are the keys to perfect furniture.

She explains that proper handling of the wood, such as guaranteeing it is adequately varnished, glued, and finished, ensures longevity.

“If the wood is not handled properly, its beauty and durability will be compromised,” she cautions. An essential step
in the process is ensuring the wood is well dried before use.

“If timber isn’t fully dried, it can ruin the finished product,” she adds, highlighting the importance of preparation.

Vertical or horizontal wood panelling can also add texture and depth to walls and ceilings.

Avoiding common mistakes in installation

Kiwanuka says many homeowners rush to finish their homes without considering the installation of essential wooden fixtures.

“It is crucial to get expert advice and make sure everything, from electrical to plumbing fixtures, is in place before finishing walls or ceilings,” he explains.

“This ensures that wooden pieces will be properly aligned and installed.” He also encourages investing time in research before committing to design choices. “You need to have a clear vision of what you want for your space. With so many styles and finishes available, having an idea of what suits your home or office helps the design process," he explains.

Options for each room:

  • Living Room: Oak, walnut, and cherry provide warmth and elegance. Medium to dark stains with a satin or semi-gloss finish offer sophistication and ease of maintenance.

  • Kitchen: Maple and hickory are durable and resistant to wear. Lighter stains and a semi-gloss finish help create a fresh, easy-to-clean environment.

  • Bedroom: Pine and cherry promote warmth and relaxation, while mahogany adds luxury. Matte or satin finishes are perfect for a calm, cosy atmosphere.

  • Bathroom: Teak, cedar, and bamboo are moisture-resistant options. Water-resistant finishes like polyurethane or marine varnish ensure longevity.

  • Home Office: Walnut and mahogany provide a professional touch, while oak offers durability. Medium to dark stains paired with a satin finish create a focused setting.

  • Dining Room: Mahogany and cherry add elegance, while oak remains classic. Dark stains with a high-gloss finish enhance the formal feel.
