Interior design in Uganda is poised for a major evolution. Ethel Chrissy Namono, the CEO and head designer at Iconic Hedges & Associates, says there is a continued emphasis on sustainable design and the blending of traditional materials like fibers, baskets, and plywood with modern aesthetics.

“Ugandans are embracing local, sustainable materials like wood, bamboo, and rattan,” says Namono.

“These materials reflect our cultural heritage while ensuring eco-friendly practices.”

Local craftsmanship, such as intricate wood carvings and textiles like bark cloth, continues to play a key role in adding authenticity and cultural depth to interiors. Bold, earthy tones are dominating the colour palette, with dark, shades of green, chocolate brown, warm sophisticated reds like burgundy, and oxblood giving interiors a cosy, dramatic yet welcoming feel. Alongside these, calming blues and greens, particularly seafoam green, will offer tranquil spaces for home offices and relaxation areas.
