Do you know the difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles? These two flooring materials have distinct characteristics that can significantly affect the design and functionality of your living spaces.

While ceramic tiles are made from a mixture of clay, minerals and water, porcelain tiles are made from a finer clay called kaolin or kaolinite and are fired at extremely high temperatures. If you need to know about each tile so as to make an informed decision for your dream home, consider visiting the Homes and Construction Expo, due to take place on Saturday November 25 and Sunday November 26, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds. Entrance fee to the expo is sh10,000 only, which gives you access to free training sessions from innovations and opportunities in real estate and housing and construction.

One of the reasons that Vision Group chose the theme: Innovations, Standards and Opportunities for its upcoming expo was to give expo-goers an opportunity to interact with sector players who have new innovations to showcase for the betterment of the building industry. For example, if you are considering tiling the floor and walls, it is prudent to choose the best material that fits into your budget. Stefano Antonetti, the managing director of Casabella Homeware, who are one of exhibitors at the expo and are located on Fourth Street-industrial area, is of the view that for a classier look, you can choose porcelain tiles. As a matter of fact, those who will visit the show will have an opportunity to interact with Casabella Homeware and get a variety of tiles from which to choose.

According to him, when it comes to choosing the perfect tiles for your home or commercial project, understanding the differences between ceramic and porcelain tiles is crucial.

Porcelain is not as common as ceramic. However, it is a perfect choice for bathrooms, kitchens, tableware, and other spaces where strength and stain resistance are needed. They are also not easy to damage and can work well in the outdoor spaces.

Ceramic tiles are kiln-fired at lower temperatures, making them more porous, resulting in a high rate of water absorption. On the other hand, porcelain tiles are made from a finer clay called kaolin or kaolinite, plus additives, such as quartz and high-density feldspar, which is fired at extremely high temperatures. This process results in a denser and less porous tile hence lowering the water absorption rate to almost 0%.

More to that, porcelain tiles are harder, denser, and more durable. They are also less prone to chipping and scratching, making them ideal for high-traffic areas while; ceramic tiles are generally better suited for areas with low foot traffic due to their softer composition. “The choice between ceramic and porcelain tiles depends on your specific needs and budget,” he emphasizes.

Cons of porcelain and maintenance

For general maintenance, sweep the floor and clean using a damp mop once a week, depending on how high the area traffic is. For a more thorough clean, use a non-abrasive detergent and warm water. Do not use acid or bleach-based cleaners. Tamar Kouyoumjian an interior designer with Vee Gallery says, as a professional interior designer, she looks out for quality, which is why she goes for Casabella tiles, “I have never been disappointed,” she says. Visitors to the Vision Group event will part with only sh10,000, which will guarantee them access to free panel discussions and workshops about all everything to do with homes and construction.
