Ugandan celebrities' become mere mortals, at least in the eyes of promoters, when international celebrities come for shows, as Nkuloga hitmaker Grenade Official learnt. During an interview, he expressed disappointment with promoters over frustrating his chances of performing with Nigerian superstar Davido.
He gave his personal experience when Davido came to Uganda for his Timeless Concert in Kololo, a city suburb, in March 30, 2024.
Grenade, real name Deus Ndugwa, said he is long-time friends with Davido and they had been scheduled to do a collabo after the concert.
"I met Davido way back in 2012 when he had come to do Twatoba collabo with Pallaso. Davido had just come back from the US. Those days, I was staying at Pallaso’s home. I had just left the street life. It's where I got the opportunity to meet Davido and we shared contacts. He became my friend. He is a good boy and we always talk and share music ideas. Davido has connected me to many brands, which have given me business. He promised me an EP immediately after the Timeless tour around Africa," Grenade, 26, said.
He noted that as he was coming to Uganda, Davido called him and asked that they meet for business.
However, Grenade said despite being a 'big' artiste here, the promoters blocked him.
"I explained what the promoters had done to Davido and he directed me to go and find him in his room at the Kampala Serena Hotel. He even agreed to perform with me, but the promoters still denied me access to the concert," Grenade cried.
He said he called Davido and explained to him the problem he had with the promoters.
"Davido sent someone who picked me at the entrance," Grenade said.
And that's how Grenade beat the hurdles to perform with the Nigerian star.
"It would have treated me badly if I had not perfomed with my friend Davido since he knew I was a big artiste here in Uganda. Some people do not want to see us prospering and yet they are not even musicians," Grenade said.
