Edward Nkata experienced a common issue many homeowners face: pest infestation. After moving into his new house in Matugga, his wife complained about a rat problem that soon escalated.
The rats not only disturbed their sleep with their nighttime activity, but also damaged their clothes and wooden furniture. This scenario is not unique, as many homes are plagued by pests such as rats, bats, termites, cockroaches, bedbugs, fleas, and geckos.
What causes pest infestations?
Denis Mwanda, a professional fumigator, identifies poor sanitation as a major cause of pest problems. Homes that are not cleaned regularly and properly can become breeding grounds for pests.
“Many homes have surrounding bushes, stagnant water, and improper waste disposal, which attract pests,” Mwanda says.
Additionally, pests can be introduced by pets like dogs and cats, which may carry fleas. Bedbugs, known for their hitchhiking abilities can infest beds and furniture despite not being able to fly or jump. Open houses provide easy access for pests like rats from surrounding areas.
Untreated septic tanks often become breeding grounds for cockroaches, which then enter the home. Rats and cockroaches feed on leftover food and hide in cluttered areas like piles of clothes and paper.
Ways to control pests
Janet Namirimu, a dealer in agrochemicals and insecticides, suggests using the appropriate insecticides for different pests.
“If you notice any pests, use an insecticide specific to the type of pest you are dealing with,” Namirimu advises.
For rats, she recommends applying the insecticide on edible items like fried fish or groundnuts, or placing it in their hiding spots.
For other pests like cockroaches, fleas, bats, bedbugs, and geckos, she suggests mixing the insecticide with water and spraying it with a sprayer.
Fumigation process
Namirimu emphasises the importance of hiring professional fumigators for effective pest control. For example, mixing a sachet of Fendonah powder with five liters of water can be effective. Fumigation should be done in the morning when the house is empty.
The person conducting the fumigation should wear protective gear, including a mask. After 20-40 minutes, thorough cleaning is essential—wash and dry clothes and mattresses under the sun.
For termites, pour the mixed insecticide into holes dug on top of anthills. The same method applies to ants inside the house.
Health advice
Haspha Nassolo, a nursing officer at the Joint Clinical Research Centre, highlights the health risks associated with pests.
“Pests not only create uncomfortable living conditions, but can also transmit diseases like cholera and dysentery. Bat waste, in particular, can produce toxic gases harmful to human health,” she explains.
To mitigate these risks, Nassolo advises disposing of food leftovers far from the house, avoiding the accumulation of old clothes and paper, washing pets regularly, and applying Sevin dust powder to the bottom walls of the house.
