Up to 200 Muslim families in Mpererwe, Kawempe Division have received donations of food and other essential items to help them successfully complete the holy month of Ramadan.
Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam, is a period of fasting, prayer and reflection. It is a time when Muslims worldwide strengthen their faith, seek forgiveness and increase their acts of charity.
The beneficiaries, most of whom are elderly and less advantaged, have been encouraged to observe Ramadhan, which is one of the five pillars of Islam and comes with blessings according to the teachings of Allah.
While handing over the donation from the Rotary Club of Kanyanya, public image director Geofrey Kulubya encouraged the Muslim community in Kanyanya and Mpererwe to consider joining Rotary.
Kulubya noted that harvesting the benefits of Ramadan is beyond merely fasting. Those who want benefits from it must deepen their spiritual connection through prayer and Koran recitation and support the needy.
Mpererwe Mosque chairperson, Yasin Mugerwa Kiwanuka, and Imam Adulhakim Kaduyu, expressed gratitude, saying the donations were timely owing to the increasing food prices.
Recognising the shared values between Rotary and Islam, Mugerwa requested the club’s membership director, Rosette Kavuma, to organise a training session at the mosque. The purpose of this session would be to introduce the Muslim community to Rotary’s humanitarian work, membership opportunities and its role in addressing local challenges.
He emphasized that a deeper understanding of Rotary would encourage more community members to join and contribute to service projects in Kanyanya and Mpererwe.
Rotary Club of Kanyanya president Ronald Ngobya Mukasa welcomed this initiative and commended the openness of the mosque leadership. He assured them that the training would be arranged as soon as possible and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in creating a safer, healthier, and more inclusive community.
He also said the donation was part of their continued support for the Muslim community whenever they enter the month of Ramadan.
