Eid-el-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, is approaching.

In fact, it is so close that the Muslims in Uganda have been urged to look out for the Moon, specifically on the evening of this Saturday (March 29).

Should the Moon be sighted that evening, then Eid-el-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday (March 30), said Dr Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, the director of Sharia at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), in a statement.

But if the Moon is not sighted on Saturday, it will mean that Eid-el-Fitr will automatically be celebrated on Monday (March 31), he added.

Lubanga requested whoever will sight the Moon or be in possession of reliable information as regards the sighting to inform UMSC officials.

"I therefore wish all Muslims happy and successful Eid-el-Fitr celebrations," he added.

"I appeal to you to celebrate strictly in accordance with the Islamic law/Sharia."

Ramadan began on March 1 following the sighting of the crescent Moon. For Muslims around the world, it has been a time of prayer and giving to charity.

During this period, believers have also been fasting, refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours and only breaking their fasts at sunset.
