Rashid Mugoya was sure he would make it into 2025, however, fate had other plans.
In a tragic twist, the 24-year-old chapati seller lost his life while attempting to retrieve a sh1,000 note.
The 9:00 pm December 31, 2024, incident near Bugiri Main Hospital in Bugiri municipality happened when a taxi passenger who had just bought a chapati tossed the note towards Mugoya. As he hurried across the road to pick it up, a speeding trailer heading to Kampala from Busia struck him, killing him instantly.
Chaos ensued as an angry mob, mainly taxi drivers, tried to lynch the trailer driver. However, he managed to escape under the cover of darkness, avoiding the mob's wrath.
Bwole village LC1 chairperson, Friday Kintu, decried the lack of humps on the road: “We’ve repeatedly asked the works ministry to install road humps here, but nothing has been done. This spot claimed ten lives in 2024”.
By press time, Mugoya’s body lay unclaimed at the Bugiri Main Hospital mortuary, awaiting identification by relatives.
Busoga East regional Police commander, John Musingo, said investigations to determine the cause of the crash are ongoing. Police are also searching for the trailer driver, who faces charges of reckless driving and causing death.
