According to Ssezibwa Region Police spokesperson Butoto Hellen, the fire started on March 16, 2025, at 12:01 pm in one of the parked vehicles before spreading to a second car and an extension behind the building.

Meanwhile, Police firefighters responded to two separate fires in Kampala on March 15, 2025:

  • Nakawa Division: A fire broke out at Mandela City Tyres warehouse on Sixth Street at 10:25 AM. It was caused by workers burning rubbish in the yard.
  • Kireka Market: Another fire started at 3:30 AM, but police patrol units assisted firefighters in containing it.

The Director of Fire and Rescue Services, AIGP Stephen Tanui, reported a 13.8% increase in fire incidents in 2024, with most fires occurring in residential buildings and makeshift structures.

“School fires also increased by 9%, from 50 cases in 2023 to 55 cases in 2024,” Tanui added.

The Police urge businesses and market vendors to follow fire safety guidelines to prevent further incidents.
