The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, has urged the government to ban TikTok, a popular social media platform among young people in the country.

Sheikh Mubajje alleged that the popular short-form video-sharing platform has not been properly regulated like other social media platforms.

Sheikh Mubajje made this statement while presiding over Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Uganda National Mosque, commonly known as Gaddafi Mosque.

He criticized the platform, saying it caters to idlers, haters, misinformers, and those who spread or seek sensational content without regard for others.

Rather than spending time on the app, which he deems useless, he advises young people to spend more time thinking of creative ways of getting themselves out of poverty.

He criticised Sheikhs who use TikTok, saying that they were not qualified and not informed about what they teach people.

“During the fasting month of Ramadan, they did a great job of misleading and distracting committed Muslims who found themselves making mistakes,” said Sheikh Mubajje.

‘It should be banned’

Faridah Namatovu, a bookbinder who attended Eid prayers at Gaddafi Mosque said the platform should be banned because it has killed the creativity of young people, adding that the explicit content shared on TikTok is dangerous for young people.
