Three people lost their lives in separate road incidents in Rukungiri and Kanungu districts during the Christmas Day festivities, police have reported.
According to Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi sub-region, the first incident occurred at Buyanja Trading Centre near the Buyanja SACCO head office in Rukungiri.
A boda boda rider, Gilbert Bidodo, was struck by a moving vehicle with registration number UFU 567B.
Maate revealed that the vehicle's driver abandoned it and fled the scene. The vehicle was impounded and taken to the police station, awaiting inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles to determine its roadworthiness.
The second incident, reported in Mizimera, Kihiihi Town Council, along the Kihiihi-Kanungu Road, claimed two lives.
The crash involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter, UBN 507J, driven by an unidentified individual, and a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, UGF 470U, ridden by 45-year-old Christopher Byabasheija.
Byabasheija, a resident of Rutare Cell in Karangara Parish, Kayonza sub-county, Kanungu district, died at the scene, while his passenger, 39-year-old Kenneth Tusiime, from Nyakabingo cell in the same parish, succumbed to injuries shortly after the incident.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the motorcycle rammed into a stationary vehicle, resulting in the fatalities.
Maate said the police were promptly alerted and visited the scene of the crash.
The bodies of the victims were transported to Kihiihi Health Centre IV mortuary, while both the Mitsubishi Canter and the motorcycle were towed to Kihiihi Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
