The National Unity Platform (NUP) party has unveiled a new election management committee and roadmap for the 2026 national polls.
The new committee is tasked with overseeing the party's internal electoral processes ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The NUP's National Executive Committee (NEC) approved the new committee and roadmap during a session chaired by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine at NUP Headquarters in Makerere – Kavule, Central Division in Kampala.
NUP secretary general, David Lewis Rubongoya while addressing the press conference on the new electoral changes said that this committee shall be tasked with identifying party flag bearers in the existing structures set in 2021.
“This team shall be required to help us identify key flag bearers in their respective areas based on the existing party structures. We had confusion during the 2021 general elections when different flag bearers were complaining that they were left out during the exercise which was conducted at the headquarters,” he said.
Rubongoya disclosed a 9-member committee including chairperson: Harriet Chemtai, who has been serving as NUP's mobiliser for the Sebei sub-region and Vice Chairperson: Ivan Ssempijja, who is the former Makerere University Guild President.
Other committee members include technical advisor, Alex Rovans Rwanyaga, Buganda representative, John Mary Ssebufu, Eastern Uganda representative, Freddie Egesa Achoka, Northern Uganda representative, Patrick Laum, Western Uganda representative, Julian Kabagambe, Publicity Secretary, Salim Sulutan, legal advisor, Jonathan Eloto and Committee Secretary, Eddy Kayabula.
The roadmap outlines the party's activities leading up to the 2026 elections, although details have not been made public.
Chemtai emphasized that the new committee will work to showcase a different NUP from the one in 2021, promoting a more inclusive image beyond Buganda.
NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and other National Executive Members praying after the meeting praying.
“We are going to redeem NUP in Uganda because we are here to work to the maximum. We are going to be NRM nightmares and cause the necessary change Ugandans have been waiting for,” she promised.
Sebuufu’s lawyer narrates prison ordeal
Magellan Kazibwe who represented Ssebuufu in Court revealed that his client could not take a plea because he was weak and unable to stand.
“The prison officers said that they shall first do the necessary medical assessment and tests at Prisons Health Centre III or even refer him to Murchison Bay in Luzira in case his medical condition deteriorates,” Kazibwe said.
“Ssebuufu was electrocuted every day and flogged mercilessly. His private parts were squeezed as they taunted him. His pictures were taken while naked. When he cried out in pain, they increased the volume of the music and continued the beating so that his cries would not be heard,” Kazibwe revealed.
