Kampala Hockey Club (KHC) Swans endured a difficult start to their campaign at the ongoing African Cup of Clubs Championships in Ismailia, Egypt, suffering a third consecutive defeat on Sunday.

The 18-woman squad faced major hurdles even before stepping onto the field, missing their opening two matches against Nigerian side Delta Queens on Thursday and Egyptian side Shakia Sports Club on Friday due to visa delays. As a result, both opponents were awarded walkover victories, gaining five goals and three points each.

Despite these setbacks, Swans player Immaculate Nakku remains optimistic about the team’s ability to bounce back as they prepare for their final group game on Monday evening.

“It was a tough game for us, but we followed our game plan and were overpowered by the Nigerian side, Kada Queens,” Nakku reflected.

Although the Swans showed glimpses of quality, their opponents' physical dominance proved overwhelming, leading to a heavy defeat.

The team also struggled with key tactical aspects, such as executing a direct approach and completing crucial passes in the final third, which limited their attacking opportunities.

This marks the Swans’ second appearance at the prestigious tournament, having made their debut in 2017 when Kampala hosted the event.

Team manager Jordan Mpiima expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt and improve in the upcoming matches.

“We are going to implement strategies like building from the back to help us control the game and convert our chances,” Mpiima stated.

He also acknowledged that inexperience played a role in the team’s slow start.

“Despite proper preparations, only one player on our team has played this tournament more than twice. The rest are learning on the job, and this inexperience might have contributed to the loss. However, we are working hard to change this narrative,” Mpiima added.

As of press time, the Swans were on the field against Ghana Revenue Stars, determined to secure their first victory of the tournament.
