Uganda's Lady Rugby Cranes 15s secured their place in the prestigious Africa Women's Rugby Cup with a commanding 63-7 victory over Zimbabwe in the final match of the Africa Rugby Women's Division I Championship in San Pedro, Ivory Coast, on Saturday.
The emphatic win caps off a perfect tournament for Uganda, who will now join South Africa, Kenya, and Madagascar in the higher-tier competition.
The achievement is particularly impressive considering the squad had only weeks to prepare together before the tournament. Yet they proved their strength across all three matches, delivering convincing wins against Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, and Zimbabwe.
The final match showcased Uganda's attacking prowess, with Lydia Nambiro leading the charge with four tries, while Peace Lekuru added three. Grace Auma, Yvonne Najjuma, and Agnes Nakuya each crossed the try line once, while Bushira Namutebi's accurate kicking contributed five conversions and a penalty.
Having successfully adapted to the challenges posed by different opponents, the Lady Cranes can now shift their focus to preparing for the Africa Women's Rugby Cup later this year. The team returns home with growing confidence and a clear statement of intent for the competition ahead.
