Assistant general secretary in charge of technical matters at the National Council of Sports (NCS)David Katende believes the revamping of Lugogo sports complex will enable the sports sector to grow.
The facilities at Lugogo are in a sorry state and this has been blamed on the duo usage of the facilities for both sporting and nonsporting activities.
The playing surface at the cricket oval is the most worrying as concerts are held there regularly. Broken bottles, bottle tops, and other dangerous objects which may injure players as a common sight after concerts.
“The Government is finalising plans regarding the renovation of the facilities,” Katende said.
Katende also clarified that national teams are free to utilize the facilities like the oval and hockey stadium and the arena.
“Sports takes precedence at Lugogo and no non-sporting activity can be staged at the expense of a sporting one more so for national teams and federations who need the facilities,” he said.
However, he tasked the federations and associations using the complex to think outside the box and set up their stadiums
“I am sure if an association like cricket or hockey got their home ground, there would be no disturbances from the general public to utilize the facility while the association has got its activities lined up,” Katende advised.
The Uganda Cricket Association is among the associations looking for a permanent solution to the problem.
