Mbarara Army Boarding Secondary School has embarked on establishing a standard sports complex to enable their students to have easy access to sports fields within the school.
The UPDF-established institution has for years been using grounds owned by neighbouring institutions within the UPDF 2nd Division Makenke barracks, Mbarara.
However, school head teacher Capt. Richard Okulu says the time has come for them to be independent.
“We want our children to have easy access to playing grounds and also be able to host all school competitions here because all along we have been limited with playing grounds,” Okulu said.

Mbarara Army has been hosting secondary school competitions, especially football, but using the Mbarara Army Primary School, Kadogo Polytechnique, and Airforce grounds, all UPDF establishments within the barracks.
With the establishment of this facility, there is clear hope for relief in hosting many other ball games whenever called upon.
According to Okulu, the facility will accommodate two football pitches, courts for netball, volleyball, and basketball, a running track for athletics, and a pavilion once it is completed.
Capt. Dickson Bainomugisha, the inspector of UPDF schools 2nd Division Makenke, said this will significantly contribute to the continued identification and development of the learners’ talents.
“We are grateful to the division commander for allowing this project to take off because it will greatly contribute to the learners’ talent development,” Bainomugisha said.
The project, whose budget estimate was not revealed, has started with the grading and leveling of the ground for all the planned pitches and courts, followed by the marking and demarcations for the fields.
