Reigning national USSSA volleyball girls champions St. Elizabeth proved they are undisputed in the sport, after going all the way to beat arch-rivals Maryhill High School 2-0 to retain the girls’ title at the USSSA Ankole Zone Ball Games II that climaxed at Ibanda Core PTC on Sunday.
The Mbarara City dominant winners were not only taking home back-to-back titles but also winning their 5th straight zonal girls' volleyball accolade since 2019.
In the same way, St Augustine Minor Seminary retained the boys’ volleyball title after seeing off a much improved Ntare School 2-0 in the final.
It was Ntare School again that retained the boys’ handball title after beating rivals Mbarara High School 14-6 with Elisha Humura contributing 6 of the goals, while team captain Elia Ahebwa made 4 on his count to steer the Mbarara City side to another title unchallenged since 2019.
However, the most unlikely champions of the competition were little-known Kibatsi SS who surprised everyone by beating contenders Mbarara Army Boarding School 26-20 to win their maiden zonal netball accolade.
“We had been playing at this level but never been successful, this year, we gave ourselves tasks and with the help of God, we have become winners and we shall celebrate this title will all the happiness,” Said team captain Everyne Kyompaire.
The Ntungamo district champions will now move to USSSA Ball Games II hosts Teso College Aloet as Ankole zone number 1.
The boys' U16 football title went back to Al Noor who beat Kyamate SS 3-0 in the final while Boni Consilii retained the girls' accolade too, after winning all 4 games of a round-robin format, for the double of girls' football in the zone.
While officiating at the awards ceremony, Ibanda RDC Coleb Tukaikiriza cautioned the young athletes against drug abuse and alcoholism as these vices jeopardize athletes’ sports development.
The championship attracted more than 120 teams competing in netball, volleyball, handball, football U16, basketball 3x3, woodball, dance sport, ludo, chess, and scrabble and the best teams won slots to represent the zone at this year’s edition of the USSSA ball games II due at Teso College Aloet, Soroti next week.
