CAF President Patrice Motsepe has recommended additional light for the Mandela National Stadium's main pitch to ensure consistent grass growth and emphasized the need for improved pitch maintenance.
During his visit, Motsepe confirmed that Namboole Stadium will exclusively host Uganda’s African Nations Championships (CHAN) games from February 1 to 28, 2024.
“The stadium’s shadow limits natural light, affecting grass growth. Additional lighting will ensure consistent growth,” Motsepe explained, while praising the quality of grass planted at the stadium and its training facility.
Accompanied by CAF officials, including Vice President Seidou Mbombo Njoya and CHAN Country Manager Serge Assume, Motsepe toured the stadium's main pitch, dressing rooms, and training areas. The Ugandan delegation included FUFA President Moses Magogo and other officials.
Motsepe commended the government’s investment in the facility's redevelopment and expressed confidence in Uganda’s readiness for CHAN. “The training facility at Namboole is ready, and the other three training venues—Muteesa II Stadium, Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium, and the KIU ground—require minimal upgrades.”
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining timelines for the CHAN 2024 and the joint AFCON 2027 hosting with Kenya and Tanzania. “Well-established structures will leave a lasting legacy beyond the tournaments,” Motsepe added.
With CAF officials stationed in all three host countries, the focus remains on ensuring readiness and delivering a successful CHAN 2024.
