Ugandan rally driver Nasser Mutebi is mounting a strong comeback after last month's engine failure at the Masaka Rally, thanks to a sh190m sponsorship from KCB Bank Uganda.
The 2010 national champion will now compete in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X at the upcoming Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally from May 8-10.
Mutebi's season had been hampered by his outdated Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, despite finishing fourth overall in last year's National Rally Championship (NRC). The KCB funding comes at a crucial time as he aims to close the gap on current NRC leader Ponsiano Lwakataka (117 points). Mutebi currently sits eighth with 48 points.
"Recognizing his potential, we've added Mutebi to our motorsport program," said KCB Bank Uganda Managing Director Edgar Byamah during the sponsorship announcement. The bank also supports fellow Ugandan drivers Michael Mukula Jr. (Subaru Impreza N14) and Isaac Ntambi (Subaru Impreza N10), as well as Kenyan crews Karan Patel (defending champion) and Nikhil Sachania.
Mutebi, partnered with co-driver Steven Bunya, now eyes a podium finish in Mbarara's challenging conditions. Mukula, competing in both African and national championships, vowed to honor his sponsors while flying Uganda's flag high. Ntambi returns after a year's absence, promising to leverage his experience for a strong performance.
This sponsorship underscores KCB's commitment to developing East African motorsport talent while showcasing rallying's power to unite communities and boost national pride. The Pearl Rally will test both man and machine against southwestern Uganda's demanding terrain.
