The Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally (POAUR) heads to Mbarara for the first time in its history, marking a departure from the traditional terrains of Kayunga and Mukono, where the event has been hosted since its inception in 1996.
This year’s edition offers a level playing field for all competitors, as organizers have mapped out entirely new rally sections, distinct even from the routes used in previous Mbarara-based events. This shift introduces a neutral battleground, adding an element of unpredictability to the highly anticipated event.
Over the years, the rally has often been a fierce contest between Ugandan and Kenyan drivers. Uganda’s Duncan Mubiru, also known as 'Kikankane', is the reigning champion, having clinched victory in the 2023 edition.
Ugandan drivers have since upgraded their machines, with Mubiru, Ronald Ssebuguzi, and Jon Consta all registering Ford Fiestas for this year’s rally. Other top contenders will be behind the wheels of Mitsubishi Evos and Subaru Imprezas.
Jas Mangat, the 2013 and 2022 champion, was expected to offer strong competition in his new Hyundai i20, but he will not be participating.
Kenya’s top contenders include defending champion Karan Patel and reigning Kenyan champion Samman Vohra, both driving rare Skoda Fabias. They are considered the biggest threats to the Ugandan hopefuls. Other Kenyan entrants to watch include Sachania Nikhil in a Ford Fiesta, Hamza Anwar and Issa Amwari in Mitsubishi Lancer Evo Xs, and Sameer Nanji in a Subaru Impreza.
Tanzania will also be represented by Prince Charles Nyerere in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X.
Despite the foreign competition, Ugandan drivers are determined to put up a strong challenge and claim the top podium spots.
“I’m ready for the tough competition. This year is mine—I want to be champion,” declared the soft-spoken Ronald Ssebuguzi.
2023 winner Duncan Mubiru echoed similar confidence: “We’re all going to a neutral ground, so no excuses. Let’s race. I’m used to every kind of competitor and machine—I fear no one.”
Veteran driver Ponsiano Lwakataka, still racing in his classic Subaru Impreza N12B—the same car with which he won the 2011 edition—remains a colorful figure in the sport, unbothered by his rivals' upgrades.
Another notable Ugandan entry is Nasser Mutebi, who returns with a new Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X after nearly a decade-long hiatus. He has set his sights on a full comeback in 2026.
Meanwhile, Susan Muwonge, famously known as the 'Super Lady,' is the only female driver in a male-dominated field. Returning to action in her Subaru Impreza N12B after a seven-year break, the 2011 and 2018 National Rally Champion promises to add flair and determination to this year’s rally.
