The 2025 season of the Mountain Dew National Motocross Championship is set to roar to life on February 2 at the E-Villas Racing Park in Kaliisizo, Greater Masaka.
Organised by the Southern Motor Club (SMC), the event promises high-octane action, featuring over 80 riders, including 15 new entrants and 15 others who have advanced to higher classes.
The season opener will showcase a mix of fresh talent and seasoned riders across various categories.
In the MX 50 Junior Class, Richard Kaye, Grace Bidan Alinda, Corey Kayiira, and Michael Karungi will take to the track, while the MX 65cc Class (ages 7-12) will see Shafiu Muluuli, Shadrach Katumba, Richard Kiviiri, Joshua Bbuule, Harve Kayiira, Jerome Mulumba Ssembirige, and Emil Ssegirinya in action. The MX1 Category will welcome debutants Yahaya Babu and Brian Biggs, adding to the excitement.
The first round of the eight-event championship is already generating buzz, with riders across all classes eager to showcase their skills and compete for titles. The event will also highlight several notable promotions, reflecting the growth and progression of the sport’s rising stars.
Among the promoted riders, Avisha Ellis Laboke, Ariella Katende, and Israel Mpuuga have moved up to the MX 50 Senior Class. Meanwhile, Faith Angel Bidan, Ridha Kateregga, Jude Kyle Musede, Noel Ssekamwa, and Shalom Winyi have advanced from MX 50 Senior to the 65cc Class. Janan Makumbi received a special promotion from MX 50 Junior to MX 65cc due to being overweight.
Last season’s MX 65cc Champion, Jonathan Katende, along with Adam Kabuye and Ramathan Mubiru, has upgraded to the MX 85cc Class, where they will join the experienced Miguel Katende, who is returning from a long injury layoff. Similarly, Jerome Mubiru and Keith Aine Bidan have been elevated from MX 85cc to MX 125cc, setting the stage for fierce competition as they adapt to more challenging classes.
The season opener will also feature compelling family dynamics, with siblings Shamira Kateete and Shadia Kateete advancing to the MX2 Class from 125cc. They will team up with their sister, Sharifah Kateete, as they aim to dominate the category together.
According to George William Katende, Clerk of the Course, the MX1, Veterans, and Masters categories remain unchanged but are expected to deliver highly competitive races. The track at E-Villas Racing Park has been extended from 1.2 km to 1.4 km, offering riders more challenges and opportunities to showcase their skills. Documentation, scrutineering, and track control will take place on February 1, ensuring a smooth and safe event.
Riders’ performances will be closely monitored as organizers prepare to select teams for the FIM Motocross of African Nations, scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya. Lead organizer Ssemakula urged riders to give their all, emphasizing the importance of preparation and determination for both local success and international representation.
With a revamped track, fierce competition, and a mix of new and experienced riders, the 2025 Mountain Dew National Motocross Championship promises to be an exhilarating season for fans and participants alike.
