Over the weekend, Uganda celebrated the long-awaited return of competitive netball as the National Novices tournament unfolded across multiple regions.
The event, which brings together amateur netball players, was held in West Nile, Eastern, Northern, Buganda, Western, and North Eastern regions, marking a significant resurgence for the sport after years of decline.
Sarah Nkonge, a representative from the Buganda region, expressed her excitement about the revival of netball, stressing the importance of nurturing young talent.

“Many girls had stopped playing netball, but we need them to stay active to secure the future of the She Cranes. Without young players, the future of netball in Uganda is at risk. With netball back, we can reclaim our glory,” Nkonge emphasized.
Buganda Region’s Enthusiastic Turnout
The Buganda region hosted its games at Kawanda Secondary School, where 12 schools—10 secondary and two primary—participated. Three male clubs also joined the competition, adding to the event’s diversity and excitement. The high turnout highlighted the region’s passion for the sport.
However, controversy arose during the semifinals when St. Mary’s Kitende, despite reaching the finals, was disqualified for fielding an ineligible player. Green Light SS, who had lost to Kitende in the semifinals, was reinstated to the final.

A Thrilling Final Showdown
The final featured a gripping match between Buddo SS and Green Light SS. Buddo SS emerged victorious with a dominant 24-14 win, securing the regional championship title. Buddo’s goal shooter, Ponny Faridah Hassan, credited their success to teamwork and determination. “We came into these games determined to win. We respected every opponent and are proud to be this year’s champions,” Hassan said.
In the club category, WOB claimed the title with three points, while Kyebando Islamic dominated the primary school category, defeating Baren Primary School 30-11.
The Road Ahead for Netball Uganda
Richard Muhumuza, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Netball Uganda, shared the federation’s plans for the future. He announced that regional champions and runners-up will compete in an inter-regional tournament to determine the overall novice champion. “We’re thrilled to see netball return and are proud of the turnout in Buganda. An inter-regional championship will help us crown the ultimate champion,” Muhumuza explained.
The National Novices tournament marks the first major netball event organized under Netball Uganda. With its successful conclusion, the federation now turns its attention to the upcoming National Rally, scheduled to take place in Busia at the end of the month.
