The Black Pirates seized control of their Nile Special Rugby Championship semifinal clash with a hard-fought 17-12 victory over defending champions Heathens in Friday's first leg at Lugogo.
The visitors' defensive discipline frustrated the hosts throughout the match. Heathens briefly led after Nicholas Kato's clever footwork created an opening try, converted by Malcolm Okello.
However, Timothy Kisiga's try leveled the scores before Pirates captain Frank Kidega crossed to give his side a 14-7 halftime advantage.
William Nkore extended the lead with a second-half penalty before Heathens' substitute Shadon Munoko injected life into the hosts' attack with a late try. Despite the rally, Pirates held firm to take a valuable five-point advantage into next week's decisive second leg at Kings Park.
"It was a tough battle, but this victory keeps our championship dreams alive," said Pirates' match-winner Nkore, whose accurate kicking proved crucial. Heathens' Munoko vowed improvements: "We'll regroup and come back stronger for the return leg."
The result marks a significant step toward redemption for Pirates, who fell to Heathens in last season's final. With their defensive organization and clinical finishing on display, the visitors now stand one strong performance away from a return to the championship decider.
